Design vs Function
There are many views on this subject, the ongoing debate between how good the visual design is and how well the message is being delivered etc. I think the best sites are the ones that do both.
The problem, is that most of us start as one type or the other. I myself have come from the make it look good camp and have had to learn the best ways to deliver the message as I go. There are people that will tell you that what a site looks like or the subtle details don't matter at all, they are wrong. There will be people that tell you as long as it looks awesome it doesn't matter if it takes 12 clicks to get to the content, they are wrong. DESIGN & FUNCTION need to both be at the top of their game to make the best sites. I am still working on that balance but the first step to overcoming your weaknesses is knowing you have a problem.
